Show Notes
We’d reviously had Andrew on the podcast, back on episode 73. Back then we were talking about his book “Dreamcast Year One”, but now he’s getting ready to work on the follow up book: “Dreamcast Year Two”
at the time of releasing the episode, the kickstarter hasn’t launched yet
But before we did that, we wanted to talk about our recent games, so…
Andrew’s Recent Games
- F1 2020
Turning the controller in your hand as if it’s a steering wheel is something we all do, just admit it.
Squidgeit’s a pro move; anyone who doesn’t do that aint gonna win.
- The Last of Us 2
The lengths that Andrew has gone through in order to ensure that he didn’t see any spoilers is pretty impressive. Right up until you find out that I haven’t even played the first one yet
talk about pro moves
- Spider-Man (2018)
I’d love to say that I survived Andrew’s “gremlin” input, but I didn’t
Due to the recent changes at Twitter, we are unable to embed tweets at this time. We apologise for the inconvenience.
yes I bought a used minidisc player
and yes I spelled MiniDisc wrong in that tweet
You’ll find out why I bought one of those, later in the episode.
Squidge’s Recent Games
- Diablo III
I went back to check
as you should, too
and Squidge wasnt playing Diablo III last time… I wonder whether he’ll be playing it next time.
And we end up talking about what Bethesda could possibly add to Skyrim when they release it for the PS5 - which is backward compatible with PS4. Which I then use as an excuse to bring up the recent Bandai-Namco story about them including a demake
like a remake, but for earlier hardware
of Pac-Man in one of their new collections for the Switch. Except that it’s neither new, nor made by Bandai-Namco. Which starts an interesting question on fan-made things, and that gave me a chance to talk about Streets of Rage Remake
I never need an excuse to talk about SORR
and how there’s a theory that Bombergames (the original creator of SORR) was hired by DotEmu to work on Streets of Rage 4.
Jay’s Recent Games
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
I absolutely love these first three games
- Hybrid Heaven
- Resident Evil 2 (N64)
seriously, this is the best port of a game ever
and you should read about it here
Dreamcast Year 2
One thing to note, dear reader
or "listener", if you’re reading this whilst listening
is that the Kickstarter for Andrew’s new book isn’t live at the time of publishing the show notes. But if you’re reading it in the future, then the links on this page will point at the real Kickstarter
links like [this one](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dreamcastyearone/dreamcast-year-two-unofficial-book
But before we get onto the new book, we talk a little about the previous one. People are still reaching out to Andrew to get copies of the first book - which is a delightful occurance, for sure.
Not only that, but people all over the world wanted copies of the book. Which, considering THE INCIDENT, meant that Andrew was unable to send them out until the date of recording.
And of course I take the time to talk about Phantasy Star Online. Also, the name of the emulator that I couldn’t remember is: Flycast.
SquidgeTaking the Fifa approach?
The list of contributors and folks being interviewed for the follow up book is incredibly impressive
you’ll need to listen to the episode to get the full list, but trust me it’s awesome
The Kerfuffle and the Special Episode
One of the most interesting backer perks for Dreamcast Year 2
at least for me
is the inclusion of a special episode of the Dreamcast Years podcast on Minidisc.
Yes, you read that correctly: Minidisc. As in one of these things:
Due to the recent changes at Twitter, we are unable to embed tweets at this time. We apologise for the inconvenience.
this is where Andrew’s "gremlin"-ability came out
And that might be one of the many reasons why I decided to get a new used replacement for my old player.
at least, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it
AndrewDhorror movies on VHS are probably the best way to watch horror movies
I spoke to Andrew off air
after we’d finished recording
about the Minidisc player that he had, and it turned out that he had the same player that I had: MZ-N710 - check out my earlier tweet for a photo of mine.
I then had then had the hair-brained scheme of getting some technology writers involved, and get them to cover the launch of the book and how it will relaunch the Minidisc craze across the world.
… I never said it was a good scheme.
I, for one, cannot wait to listen to the special episode on my Minidisc player. But that might be becasue I’ve gone all in on Minidisc, these past few days
Aside from the EGX and Resident Evil 2 episodes, this episode had the fastest turn around
and have actually started using it as a way to check over the episodes when they come back from Squidge - as he’s the editor and post-producer.
Because Andrew brought up the fact that Minidisc was a data tranfer format, I wanted to mention that I used one to take my university disertation to the printers. But I also mentioned, off hand, that they are used in:
- Resident Evil Zero
- Resident Evil & the REMake
- Resident Evil 2
- Resident Evil Outbreak
as MO disks. The reason they were called MO discs is because that’s the name of the technology that Minidisc uses: Magneto-optical disc. In the same way that WiFi is the tradename for 802.1a/b/g/n
you dont’ ask for an 802.1 enabled wireless router
Minidisc is the trade name for MO discs. Just a little knowledge for your face whilst you listen to the episode
who said this blog isn’t educational?
We also postulate on what the possible future might have contained, had the Minidisc not died when it did. Perhaps Sony could have used them for their handheld devices… We’ll never know.
Dreamcast Mini
We decided to challenge ourselves to imagine a Dreamcast mini. Imagine that you had an unlimited budget, and unlimited storage space, which 5-10 games would you have on there?
Obviously, Sega can totally borrow this idea if they want. All I’d need is a passing mention in the announcement advertisements, and a signed copy.
Andrews Choices
- Shenmue
- Metropolis Street Racer
- Chu-Chu Rocket
- Crazy Taxi
- Power Stone
- Skies of Arcadia
- Jet Set Radio
- D2
- Segagaga
- El Dorado Gate
the art work for this series was created by Yoshitaka Amano
as in the art designer for all of the early Final Fantasy games
so you know it’s good
Squidge’s Games
- Crazy Taxi
- Jet Set Radio
- Metropolis Street Racer
- Shenmue
- Fur Fighters
- Phantasy Star Online v1
- Resident Evil 2
- Soul Calibre
- Zombie Revenge
- Blue Stinger
SquidgeIt’s an experience … I like Blue Stinger to chicken pox, because once you’ve experienced it, you can’t get it again. And the earlier you experince it the better, so that you can appreciate the rest of the Dreamcast games.
And we all agreed with exactly that.
Jay’s Games
- Tokyo Extreme Racer
- Metropolis Street Racer
- Shadow Man
not the German version
- Phantasy Star Online V2
- Crazy Taxi
- Dino Crisis
- Jet Set Radio
- Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2
- Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Bonus: Dreamkey
Does Shenmue count as a game that you would have to list? As it seems like it would be a game that would just appear on the console anyway.
Combined Without Duplicates
- Shenmue
- Metropolis Street Racer
- Chu-Chu Rocket
- Crazy Taxi
- Power Stone
- Skies of Arcadia
- Jet Set Radio
- D2
- Segagaga

- Resident Evil 2
- Soul Calibre
- Zombie Revenge
- Blue Stinger
- Tokyo Extreme Racer

- Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2
- Resident Evil: Code Veronica
That looks like a mighty wonderful lined up of Dreamcast games, if I’m honest. I mean, who wouldn’t want to buy that?
One last thing: While Squidge was talking about how I “cheesed” Metropolis Street Racer, I bought up “the old N64 F1 advert”. Well, this was that advert:
